Nearly three million years ago,our ancestors were believed to have encountered a kind of retro viral infections,during which those retroviruses start to deposited their genome in to human genome.We referred this kind of viral genome archive as a Human Endogenous Retroviral DNA.
Our genome bears nearly 8 - 9% of HERV along with certain families of retroelements.This event happened in course of germinal cell infection.By using this virus fossil,Theary Heidmen recreated the phoenix virus.Recently new families of HERV are discovered,which are playing very vital role in human development & evolution.Below i mentioned some of the important roles;
1) In resisting exogenous virus infections
2) Involvement in placenta formation
3) act as regulators for most of the cellular genes
4) suspected in diseases like Multiple Sclerosis & Rheumatoid arthritis
5) also suspected in spontaneous carcinogenesis,leukemia
More research is needed to explore the HERV archive in future.
